The largest sized box I found online was 15 x 12 x 12.  And that is a Priority Mail Regional Rate Box C.  If you go to your local PO, they will have larger boxes but they will probably need to be reworked or cut down to fit any item you'd like to ship.  If you want something a little closer to a custom fit, I'd recommend going to a Home Depot, Office Depot, or the alley behind the local Vons or Albertson's.

BEST WRITING TIP . . . EVER.  From Bob Bly

Dear Direct Response Letter Subscriber:

I was thinking about it the other day, and I reached the
conclusion that the #1 difference between good writers and amateurs is as follows....

Many writers who are amateur, mediocre, bad, or just not worth reading write mostly about their personal opinions, thoughts, stream of consciousness, and feelings - in other words, whatever bubbles into their minds.

This is why so many blogs are utter crap: Bloggers can write whatever they want. There is no publisher or editor to say, "Hey, this isn't good - don't publish this!" Indeed, they can and often do publish everything that pops into their head.  Exceptions? Of course.

Good writers - those worth reading - have something unique, valuable, or useful to say. And what they say is not just whatever they think. It is a distillation of wisdom produced by experience, observation, study, and activity.

In other words, good writers are good because they know something and can offer value by sharing it with their readers.

Average or bad writers don't really know anything, and so their writing is vacuous, without valuable or hard-won ideas, wisdom, or knowledge.

"Write what you know" is old advice. The problem is a lot of people who write don't know anything - or at least do not know anything that other people also want to know. And so they have nothing to write about.

Therefore it follows that if you want to be a good writer instead of an average or bad writer, you must gain knowledge, wisdom, or experience - so you have something of value and interest to write about other than your feelings and thoughts.

Here are some suggestions for acquiring the base of knowledge that can transform your writing from low value to high value:

1) Read widely and constantly. As insurance billionaire Arthur Williams (better known as A.L. Williams) once observed, most of humankind's knowledge can be found in books.

2) At work or in your personal life, take on a difficult task or project that no one else wants to do. If you succeed, you can write your own ticket selling your expertise to others both in your writings and as a consulting service.

Example: My old college friend EG led his company in an early SAP (software) implementation and then made a handsome living as a SAP expert.

3) Have more experiences. Instead of watching TV, be on the board of a nonprofit like my colleague BK, or buy and run a bar like my writer friend CF. Or be like my friend DY who built a shack in the middle of the woods, lived there for a year, and then wrote a novel about it. The more you do, the more you have to write about.

4) Associate with successful people. Soak up their knowledge and experience. Ask questions to find out what they know that others don't. Then distill what you learn and pass it on to your readers.

5) Take or teach a course.

For instance, in my early days in NYC, I took some Learning Annex courses on various career options such as music and business. I then wrote about what I learned in my John Wiley & Sons (their site here) book Dream Jobs: a Guide to Tomorrow's Top Careers.

I had been a technical writer at Westinghouse in Baltimore, and when I moved to NYC, I taught a technical writing course at New York University. The course became the basis for my McGraw-Hill book  The Elements of Technical Writing, which I wrote in 1981 and is still in print today.

Nicholas Baker: "If you think your writing furthers life or truth in some way, then you keep writing. But if that feeling stops, you have to find something else to do."

Sincerely,

Bob Bly

FIGHT A TRAFFIC TICKET: TRIAL BY DECLARATION

I had no idea this could be done. Martin Hill writes:

The revenue agents are getting pretty aggressive issuing expensive tickets, so everyone should fight them whenever possible. Contrary to popular belief, you don't always have to 'take a day off work' to fight a ticket. The California Vehicle Code outlines the rights of all motorists ticketed in CA. One good way to fight a ticket is through the mail, using a TRIAL BY DECLARATION. And if you lose, you're entitled

to a whole new trial in person!  It's like a free shot, with nothing to lose.

This is one of the most rudimentary steps that motorists ticketed in California can take to challenge their tickets. It is outlined in the CA Vehicle Code: V C Section 40902 Trial by Written Declaration

I have beaten nearly fifteen tickets of all sorts since I learned how to properly challenge traffic 'revenue' tickets in 2001. I've beaten speeding tickets, 'dog off leash' ticket, cell phone ticket, a commercial logbook ticket, parking tickets, etc. It is very easy. We encourage others to do the same. We have an extensive Traffic Ticket Archive Section outlining many victories included with court documents. I should note that I have also won in California Superior Court of Appeals, without a lawyer- in 2003. I wrote my own legal briefs and had a phony speeding ticket conviction overturned by a panel of three Superior Court Appellate Judges. I came across the ruling recently in some files, and will post it next week, along with my brief which they ruled on. My friend John Shanahan has beaten five tickets through the mail using TRIAL BY DECLARATION without ever having to appear in court. John beat three seat belt tickets, one red light camera ticket, and one stop sign ticket all through the mail. His archive page with court documents is here. Recently, a Pasadena, CA newspaper ran the story of an 81 year old man who beats a red-light camera ticket, and credited LibertyFight.com with the know-how.

Sometimes I outline specific victories but neglect to explain the most basic simple things that people can do to save time and money. A niece of mine, for example, who's only 20 and had never been to court in her life, beat the first ticket she ever got and later beat two  additional ones, for three tickets total- she beat a seat belt ticket, a speeding ticket, and a parking ticket. This is not brain surgery folks. Don't be a lazy slug and submit to the state. Make these rotten  revenue agents work for your money.

BUYER BEWARE

You need to follow this up carefully, for there are risks to you legally and financially if you fail to observe procedure.  Here is a list of the officially posted consequences that come from appealing through Trial by Declaration and you LOSE!!!  One consequence depends entirely upon the judge, and that consequence is that he could withhold your chances of going to traffic school if you lose.  In your appeal via Trial by Declaration, you have to ask the judge "If the charges against are not expunged, then I would like to apply for traffic school."  You have to make a specific request.  It's not automatic.  Here is another link that might provide insight.

Here is a link on procedure.  Go to page 6.

NEED A KINDLE?

There are Kindle e-Readers.  These are primarily for books, magazines, and articles.  You're able to download a lot of books. I chatted with the Amazon representative, Grace, who said that "Kindle e-Readers come with an experimental application called Web Browser.  It supports JavaScript, SSL, and cookies, but does not support media plug-ins (Flash, Shockwave, etc.) or Java applets; websites that use these features may not display properly."

Then there is the more popular Kindle Fire.  There are different versions.  The prices listed below are the STARTING prices.  If you search for any one of these devices on Amazon, you'll find them for a lot more because of all the different features.  But you can still purchase these devices at the prices below with just the basic features.  See what you can find at eBay.

Kindle Fire HD for $139          4.5 Stars.
Kindle Fire HD, 8.9 for $229      4 Stars.
Kindle Fire HDX 7" for $229    4.5 Stars.
Kindle Fire HDX, 8.9 for $379  4.5 Stars.

Scroll to the bottom of this link to compare the features of each. It's a good comparison.  The 8.9 refers to the screen size.  Whereas the 1st generation Kindle Fire was 6".  The HD and the HDX are each 7".  But if you're going to be making mobile presentations, then going for the 8.9 will really impress.  Now, which of the two 8.9's do you choose?  The price difference is $150.  The HDX 8.9 is the right size, right screen size, and perfect weight.  But if all you can afford is the HDX, then you'll have to endure the slightly larger device size and weight.

If you're worried about price and you already have an older version of Kindle, you can trade your older version in for an upgrade.  You can do so by going to these two Amazon pages here and here.

This Amazon page shows what you can get for your Kindle trade-in.  It's all based on condition.  Amazon has 3 conditions: Like New, Good, Acceptable.  I was told that I can get $35 for my 1st Generation, Kindle 6.  Not bad.  The way that the trade-in at Amazon works is this.  They actually offer trade-ins on lots of products.  When you submit your product, in my case my Kindle 6, they promise to expunge all the data on the device and then send me after 14 days a $35 Amazon Gift Card.  Once I have that card, I can spend that $35 on anything for sale at Amazon.  But I cannot spend that $35 retroactively on a new Kindle that I buy today.  I have to spend that card on something else or wait 14 days for that card to arrive and THEN purchase a new Kindle.  I don't like that arrangement.

OBi100 VoIP Telephone Adapter

I learned about this device today.  The product is called OBi100 VoIP Telephone Adapter and Voice Service Bridge.  It is a bridge, like MagicJack, between your landline and your computer. Here's a video that shows you how to set it up. Good luck.

Here is a second video that might offer a clearer video shot. Enjoy. Hope this helps.

Samsung 4G

Samsung Galaxy S4, Black (AT&T)
The Samsung Galaxy, S4 seems to be the preferred phone.  AT&T is offers this phone for $49.99 with contract only.  But what's in the contract?

Following is forum exchange at GaryNorth.com's Specific Answers.  Members' comments are separated by an asterisked line as follows ******.

The discussion begins here:
Over the years I have worked for most of the cell providers. You must answer a few questions before asking your questions.

1. Are you going to travel and want coverage most of the way. Then you are limited to AT&T and Verizon.

2. Can you accept limited service? If so, take a long look at T-Mobile. Buy $100 of minutes on the prepaid plan and then only $10 a year after that. That is $.85 a month for very limited use. (How limited is the use?)  The $10 gives you 100 minutes a year, but my first year I only used 61 of them. The unused minutes carry over, so your first year of 1000 minutes can last you a long time.

3. If you plan to stay in one metro area, then pick your "Eat all you can" plan. For a fixed amount, you get unlimited, but the coverage is very limited as you travel.

4. Ask all of your friends, as there could be a far better option for you in your local area.

T-Mobile has very limited equipment; that means limited capacity. Many of our sites are co-located. That means that several carriers cooperate for tower space and emergency generator capacity. T-Mobile uses the same equipment (Ericsson) as AT&T.  My keys open up both.

My friends are able to unlock a phone for use by any carrier. Unless you are doing something special, don't worry about LTE (4G).  It's not for conversations.

Don't believe any of the advertising of coverage by any company. They all lie by parsing the advertising wording in a misleading way.
**********************************
ptel.com uses T-Mobile networks, so be sure you're covered.

Mobile phones are generally locked to a carrier. You need to find which carrier your iPhone belongs to and take it there; otherwise, it will need to be unlocked which I believe may now be illegal (the laws changed just last year). Regardless, you can find a local mobile shop to do it for $5 to $30. If it is not GSM [here is a list of GSM carriers in the US], which uses a SIM card, it will not work with ptel. AT&T and T-Mobile are the GSM carriers.

I bought an unlocked Nexus 4 from Google for $300, now $200, and put a ptel sim card in it. Voila!! The phone needs to be unlocked.

The Nexus 4 has hardware comparable to top-line $600-700 phones but costs much less.  Google makes money on ads, not hardware, and I've heard that the 8GB version is sold right at cost.

****************************************
No recommendations on a carrier, but in general try to avoid a contract if you can. I'm 1 year into a 2 year Verizon contract and I'm getting socked with $80+ per month for data and voice and will certainly look for something cheaper when my contract is up. I just shake my head at how stupid I was when I see the monthly bills...

That $49 offer is AT&T's offer.  I need to contact them, and not Amazon, about the 2-year contract. Their contact number is here.

Metro PCS

MetroPCS

MetroPCS @ Envios Express, Inc.
Okay, funny thing happened today.  I found this store.  It is recessed off of Jellick Avenue and Sierra Leone.  It was closed.  According to its hours, it states that it is open on Sundays from 8-7pm.  I was there around 3:30pm.  A young girl, perhaps the daughter of the owner, was visible through the front glass but she was in no position to open the door, so I left.  But it was one of those general goods stores where it has everything.  Anyway, I didn't buy a phone there.  Went to Target and got information there on a Samsung Galaxy S4.

MicroAge Computer Mart no longer exists or resides at the address cited above.  Stupid me, I drove to the place first before calling.  And when I arrived at their address, which is in the northeast corner of Diamond Bar Blvd. and Grand, I found an empty store and one that had been so for many, many months.  It was only after I arrived home, an hour after running to other big box stores, that I called their number also cited above.  I did not even get a dial tone.  So it doesn't look like they've moved to any where but simply went out of business or were forced to go out of business.  I do like the name of their store, though, MicroAge.  Let's hope that they move onto bigger and better things.

By the way, what I was hoping to purchase was one of those CD/DVD wallets, where you slide CDs and DVDs into a portable wallet.  I went to Rite-Aid.  They didn't have any.  I went to Target.  They had none either.  I went to Sears.  Zero.  Unbelievable.  I was near a Staples, but I was running out of steam and hope.  So I went ahead and purchased the one at Amazon.
